Muscular Dystopia in the Facial Nerve Canal
By Juan L. Proprioception is a quality of somatosensibility that informs the central nervous system about the static and dynamics of muscles and joints. In muscles, the proprioceptive originates in the specialized sensory-organ-denominated muscle spindles. Nevertheless, facial muscles lack muscle spindles, but the facial proprioception plays key roles in the regulation and coordination of facial musculature and diverse reflexes. At the basis of these functional characteristics are the multiple communications between the facial and the trigeminal nerves, and neuroanatomical studies have demonstrated that facial proprioceptive impulses are conveyed via branches of the trigeminal nerve to the central nervous system.

The Proprioception in the Muscles Supplied by the Facial Nerve
The finding of a tumor consisting of striated muscles and fibrous connective tissue attached to the dorsal side of the facial nerve sheath located in the cavity of the pyramidal portion of the canalis facialis is described. The observation was made when the facial nerves of three patients were exposed during the surgical treatment for Bell's palsy. The finding is interpreted as dystopy due to the deviation in the common development of the facial nerve and facial muscles. Other clinical aspects are pointed out. By contracting, the muscles pull on the skin and exert their effects. They are the only group of muscles that insert into skin. These muscles have a common embryonic origin — the 2nd pharyngeal arch. They migrate from the arch, taking their nerve supply with them.
