Songs of Innocence and of Experience , masterpieces of English lyric poetry, written and illustrated by William Blake. The rhythmic subtlety and delicate beauty of both his lyrics and his designs created rare harmony on his pages. It contained a slightly rearranged version of Songs of Innocence with the addition of Songs of Experience.

Essay: Comparison of Blake’s songs of innocence and songs of experience

The church, the government, and his parents have essentially robbed the chimney sweeper of his innocence. The boy was abandoned by his hypocritical parents to die as a chimney sweeper while they go to church to pray. Instead, it depicts a child whose innocence was stolen and replaced with experience. He too has the chance to regain his innocence as long as he tries to be good while on Earth. Tom and his friends can look forward to being at peace in heaven even though the hope of death is disturbing.

Thus the collection as a whole explores the value and limitations of two different perspectives on the world. Many of the poems fall into pairs, so that the same situation or problem is seen through the lens of innocence first and then experience. Blake does not identify himself wholly with either view; most of the poems are dramatic—that is, in the voice of a speaker other than the poet himself. Blake stands outside innocence and experience, in a distanced position from which he hopes to be able to recognize and correct the fallacies of both. In particular, he pits himself against despotic authority, restrictive morality, sexual repression, and institutionalized religion; his great insight is into the way these separate modes of control work together to squelch what is most holy in human beings.

Songs of Innocence and Experience

Songs of Innocence and of Experience [1] is a collection of illustrated poems by William Blake. It appeared in two phases: a few first copies were printed and illuminated by Blake himself in ; five years later he bound these poems with a set of new poems in a volume titled Songs of Innocence and of Experience Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul. Blake was also a painter before the creation of Songs of Innocence and Experience and had painted such subjects as Oberon , Titania , and Puck dancing with fairies. Often, interpretations of this collection centre around a mythical dualism, where "Innocence" represents the "unfallen world" and "Experience" represents the "fallen world". This world sometimes impinges on childhood itself, and in any event becomes known through "experience", a state of being marked by the loss of childhood vitality, by fear and inhibition, by social and political corruption and by the manifold oppression of Church, State and the ruling classes. The stark simplicity of poems such as The Chimney Sweeper and The Little Black Boy display Blake's acute sensibility to the realities of poverty and exploitation that accompanied the " Dark Satanic Mills " of the Industrial Revolution.

Throughout the poem commentaries recurring themes have been highlighted. This section indicates those poems which show each theme worked out through a range of perspectives. The list of relevant poems after each theme is not exhaustive and you may trace the ideas in other texts. For example, ferocious power and energy exist alongside what is fragile and tender. This creates unnecessary questions and produces unhealthy splits between what are understood as forces of good and forces of evil. According to the Bible, Heaven and Hell impinge on human experience. Thus, the powerful energies within the world and the energies and instincts within human beings are necessary and beautiful.

What do these paired poems have in common, or rather, what do these poems lack in common to make them different; one poem is innocent, and one is experienced. In , Blake wrote a novel entitled An Island in the Moon.

Many of them are very clearly paired up, an Innocence song and an Experience song deliberately written to compare and contrast with each other: not only those with identical titles such as "Nurse's Song" and "Holy Thursday", but also others with parallel structures such as "The Lamb" and "The Tyger".
