Summary: First published in , this text is designed to be used by graduate-level social work students in courses on evaluation and program design. Over the course of 20 years and 6 editions, the goals of the book have remained the same: to prepare students to participate in evaluative activities within their organizations; to prepare students to become critical producers and consumers of professional evaluative literature; and to prepare students for more advanced evaluation courses and texts. Grinnell, Gabor, and Unrau aim to meet these objectives by presenting a unique approach that is realistic, practical, applied, and user-friendly.

Social Work Research and Evaluation: Foundations of Evidence-Based Practice

Following an outline of basic premises that lend meaning to and support evidence-based practice EBP , this article discusses three obstacles that challenge implementation of EBP in routine practice: 1 the uncritical transfer and use of lay decision heuristics, 2 espousal of epistemologies that are inhospitable to EBP, and 3 the dilemma that is inherent in idiographic application of empirical generalizations. The author presents a conception of practice guidelines for intervention PGI , in which principles and procedures drawn from single-system design and systematic planned practice are integrated. The PGI culminates with an outline of an algorithm for implementation of empirically supported interventions that reconciles its uncertain fit to an individual client through a recursive adaptation-application-evaluation process to maximize outcome attainment. Implications for research and for professional education are drawn. Most users should sign in with their email address.

Written in English. Grinnell, Jr. Thank you for your Edition: 9. Evidence-based practice - what it might mean, how it can be achieved, whether it should be aspired to - is the subject of much debate and argument in social work. Since the first edition in , Social Work Research and Evaluation has provided graduate-level social work students with basic research and evaluation concepts to help them become successful evidence-based practitioners, evidence-informed practitioners, and practitioners who are implementing evidence-based programs.

Social work research and evaluation : foundations of evidence-based practice

Social workers increasingly are seeking information about evidence-based practices. Numerous resources are emerging to help connect research to practice and provide information that can be helpful to practitioners. Since the term evidence-based practice EBP is used in numerous ways, definitions will be provided that can help expand social workers understanding of EBP. Since the identification of evidence-based practices involves assessing the available body of practice-relevant research, having a robust social work research base is important. In April , the National Institute of Mental Health NIMH hosted an invitational symposium of social work leaders, representatives from federal agencies and national organizations, consumer and advocacy groups, and experts who were implementing model EBP efforts in states and at schools of social work.

Evidence-based practice EBP is an educational and practice paradigm that includes a series of predetermined steps aimed at helping practitioners and agency administrators identify, select, and implement efficacious interventions for clients. This entry identifies definitions of EBP and traces the evolution of EBP from its origins in the medical profession to its current application in social work. Essential steps in the process of EBP and challenges associated with applying EBP to social work practice, education, and research are noted. Evidence-based practice EBP is a five-step process used to select, deliver, and evaluate individual and social interventions aimed at preventing or ameliorating client problems and social conditions. At its most basic level, EBP seeks to systematically integrate evidence about the efficacy of interventions in clinical decision-making.
