Fundamentals of game development
Game design is the art of applying design and aesthetics to create a game for entertainment or for educational, exercise, or experimental purposes. Increasingly, elements and principles of game design are also applied to other interactions, in the form of gamification. Game designer and developer Robert Zubek defines game design by breaking it down to its elements, which he says are the following: . Games such as board games , card games , dice games , casino games , role-playing games , sports , video games , war games , or simulation games benefit from the principles of game design. Academically, game design is part of game studies , while game theory studies strategic decision making primarily in non-game situations. Games have historically inspired seminal research in the fields of probability , artificial intelligence , economics, and optimization theory. Applying game design to itself is a current research topic in metadesign.

The gaming industry is larger than Hollywood, by many measures. People spend tremendous amounts of time and money on games—and even pay to watch other people play games and not just baseball…the competitive video game market is huge…and baffling! One of our favorite books, Finite and Infinite games, talks about how games appear in time and space and make a goal and a winner clear at the end, based on rules. When compared with most parts of our lives, that seems like a pretty good bargain — at our jobs, when does the change stop? Life is, by some measures, an infinite game, where the rules constantly change and winners turn into losers, and vice versa.

Video Game Design
Video game design is the process of designing the content and rules of video games in the pre-production stage and designing the gameplay, environment, storyline, and characters in the production stage. The designer of a game is very much like the director of a film in many ways; the designer is the visionary of the game and controls the artistic and technical elements of the game in fulfillment of their vision. Within the video game industry , video game design is usually just referred to as " game design ", which is a more general term elsewhere. Video game programmers have also sometimes comprised the entire design team. A notable exception to this policy was Coleco , which from its very start separated the function of design and programming. As video games became more complex, computers and consoles became more powerful, the job of the game designer became separate from the lead programmer. Soon game complexity demanded team members focused on game design.
